Learning how to take photos of flowers can give us our hours of wonderful enjoyment. Flower photography is a fulfilling aspect of photography that many people love. It\’s so easy to take photos of flowers because we are fortunate to have them everywhere. If you don\’t have any in your garden then you may want to head to a park or perhaps some public parkland. There are many ways to learn how to take photos of flowers. So let\’s get started on some tips.
The first thing you need to do is choose your lighting very carefully. Flowers are best photographed under soft, filtered lighting conditions so you don\’t get any strong contrast of life ruining your image. Soft lighting can be found in the form of an overcast day. These overcast conditions are ideal for shooting flowers because they reduce harsh shadows and increase the detail and beauty of the flower.
There are lots of handy ways to learn how to photograph flowers. One of these ways is using a filter. If you find that you are losing some of the detail because of the bright light then you may want to use a polarising filter. A polarising filter is a filter that acts as a pair of sunglasses for your camera. It darkens everything and reduces glare in your image. This is ideal if you are unable to shoot your flower in overcast and filtered conditions.
There are plenty of helpful methods to help you learn how to photograph flowers. Another great to photographing flowers is to use a polarising filter. This filter darkens everything. It\’s very useful when you are shooting your flower in bright light. Bright light can cause a loss of detail on your flower because it\’s so small and fine. The camera finds it hard to photograph if there is too much light flooding the flower. If the light just isn\’t right then use a filter to darken the light and bring out the detail.
A polarising filter is made of darkened glass that sits over your lens. You screw it in at the front and it not only darkens the light but reduces the glare caused by reflections or strong light. Think of this as a pair of sunglasses for your camera. A simple analogy I know but it does the same thing. Try using one of these if you simply can\’t shoot in anything else but strong sunlight.
One of the greatest techniques to get beautiful photos of flowers is to keep the camera as still as you possibly can. If shutter speed is not something that you have mastered yet, then start keeping the camera really still by way of a tripod. Using a sturdy tripod for gives you more of an advantage to creating create sharper and clearer photos.
To help with creating excellent photographic composition, try zooming in. Create a tightly cropped flower photo. It looks better and more beautiful than ones that have distraction going on in the background. Take note of the fact that if you zoom in it means you are photographing a smaller area. When you photograph a smaller area, it means you will have less light to work with. See how it always comes back to your light?
Want your flower photos to be sharp? This is where f stop and aperture comes in to play. When you have a small f stop (high number) it means you have a greater chance of creating sharper images. What is f stop? F stop is a small opening in your lens that lets light in, or reduces it. When you have a smaller opening, the camera is able to sharpen its view, so to speak. If you are unsure about f stop then don\’t worry I\’ll explain it another time. For now, just watch your lighting. That\’s the main thing.
If you can\’t crop something due to position or lens, then make sure your background is blurry. A blurry background provides your flower with some room to breathe so to speak. You will be able to create nicer flower shots of your foreground (front) is sharp and the background doesn\’t feature as an important part of your photograph.
No sooner than you go outside and photograph the most magnificent rose from your friends garden, no sooner does it start to move in the breeze. This is pretty painful if you do not want your shutter speed. Your shutter speed is the element in your photography that controls movement and motion. Flowers move and you most likely do not want blurry photos so increasing your shutter speed is the way to combat this.
A small shadow is not a destructive thing for flower photography, from an artistic standpoint. You can have a small shadow of a stem across the surface. What we need to be concerned about it the shadow that overrides the detail. The detail of the flower is most important.
Flower photography is one of the most enjoyable and fun experiences you can have in nature photography. Once you apply good lighting, composition and technical methods you will quickly find you just know how to take photos of flowers easily and quickly. And remember to have fun!
Getting good, sharp focus is always the aim. Clear focus depends on shutter speed, f stop and lighting. Once you have all these in place then taking good photos of flowers becomes easier and easier. After a while you will be so good at it, it will become second nature.
This links up with f stop as well. F stop is the small opening in your lens. It lens light in or shuts it out. When you have a large f stop to let loads of light in, your sharpness tends to decrease. You must find the balance between a nice sharp f stop and having enough light. I recommend shooting with an f stop of about 16 onwards.
If you can\’t shoot your flower photos on a cloudy day then why not use the bright light to your advantage? Bright scenes work fine if the light is evenly spread accross your photo. It\’s this balance of light that we want to aim for. You can then set your exposure to the light and strive to get the detail.
