5 Ways To Learn Photography From An Online Photography Course
Many people have asked the question of professional photographers, “What is the most important aspect of running a photography business?” The answer is always the same; marketing. I have many times been given the ratio of 1:9. That is 1 part or 10% photography and 9 parts or 90% marketing. Regrettably, it’s true.
I’ve come across people that are brilliant photographers and pay no attention to marketing. What do they achieve in the professional industry? Not much. I’ve also known people who are absolutely terrible photographers and excellent at marketing. What do they achieve? Answer: an excellent income and early retirement.
So the question is: “Can I learn what I need from an online photography course?” The answer is: of course you can. The only question to ask yourself is: “what do I need to know? The answer is: the business side of photography. Along side this, choose your area of interest and follow the skills necessary to acquire these skills.
1. Skills Achievement
Acquiring the skills of technical procedures in photography is easy. Any one can learn this. You naturally need to acquire the basic skills in operating a professional Digital SLR. There are many course available to provide you with the basics. The difficult aspects to acquire in order, in my opinion are: marketing, creativity and then techniques.
2. Decide your Market
What do I like photographing? This is one of the first questions to ask yourself. Do you like portraiture, landscapes, travel, wedding, racing cars etc, etc? There are many genres out there, best to go with what you like to photograph. If the result is portraits, find a portraiture course to provide you with the tips and skills.
3. Creativity
Creativity, I believe can be learned. And there are many ways to gain this. The most obvious is to work at it as hard as you can. Take thousands of photographs. You can afford to in this digital age. Look at your photographs and analyze why certain images work and others don’t. There are many resources on creativity, but in the end, it will be up to you to acquire this. Again, you can search on line and find many courses offering guidance in this area.
4. Technique
Then work on technique. This can easily be picked by any of the many online photography courses. What is your trade mark? Do you work in black and white, color, prints on canvas, large prints, a area! Find a niche that helps you market and separate yourself from the hordes.
5. Marketing
Marketing skills is something that you must obtain if you want to be a professional photographer. Being a fantastic photographer does not automatically get you work, you must know the art of selling yourself. If you don’t address this aspect of business, you have little chance of succeeding. If you are interested in being a photographer of ‘personal expression’, then the business aspect is not related. If you want to make money, be aware that you need to address this at some time.
