If you’re thinking about starting a photography business, it pays to do some research first.

What kind of photography business are you thinking of starting? For instance, if wedding photography appeals to you then you may well be able to fit your business around your day job.

Let’s take a look at some of the different ways you can start your own photography business:

1. Sell your photos as “stock” or “royalty free” photographs.

Stock photos are maybe one of the easiest ways to get started. So long as you’ve got a digital camera and a computer connection, you can upload your photos to the various stock photography sites and start getting a few sales. Choose your topics carefully - spend some time on the stock photo sites to see what are the most popular downloads. Wherever you live, you should be able to find subjects to photograph and upload.

2. Wedding photography

You’ll need a good quality camera for this and maybe also someone with a video camera. Weddings have certain “set” photos that must be taken - you must find out about these before you start in the business. Because most weddings take place at weekends, this can be a great way to start your photo business part time. Properly done, wedding photos can be very profitable as you get paid not only for taking the photos but also for any extra prints you sell.

3. A “Not for everyone” idea

Don’t read this section if you’re easily offended. Unless you’ve been a total recluse on the internet, you’ll know that there are some sites that show photographs of nude women. Taking nude photos is big business and isn’t limited to just the hard core sites. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how much money you can make with this idea if you’re happy to do the work.

4. Other photo business ideas

There’s an almost unlimited number of ways you can make money and start a photography business. One of the best handbooks I’ve come across can be found here. It’s a comprehensive guide to starting your own photography business and is highly recommended.
