Freelance photography can and probably will start out as a part time venture. It can stay that way if you want it to or you can build it into a full time job.
If you want to do freelance photography work you are going to have to have a portfolio. A portfolio is a sampling of your work. Something to show your potential customers and clients. Make it nice don’t just have your photos in an envelope, put them in a nice album. Be professional!
A good way to build your portfolio is to sell photos online. This is going to benefit you because you will be learning your craft, your equipment and be getting paid while you do it. The quality of the photograph is what determines how much you get paid for your photos, on or offline. Some people have more of a natural talent than others for setting up scenes and taking photos. It is a skill that anyone can learn and the more you do it, the better you get.
If you think you need to, there are plenty of courses and classes you can take. Online or off you will have no shortage of classes.
Once you start learning about photography and creating a portfolio, you can start submitting your photos to contests and magazines. Get a list of photography markets and start submitting to ones that accept your type of photos. Don’t expect to make it to the big times right away. Few people actually achieve this but you can start small and eventually make your way into a nice living from freelance photography.
There are other things you are going to need to know about when you have your own freelance photography business. One of those things is Photoshop. It doesn’t matter if you are working for yourself or someone else, if you are in the business Photoshop is a must. You can do some fantastic things with a not so hot image in Photoshop.
